Pre-requisites for Optimal outcome with artificial eyes

1.

Good fornices:
both superior and inferior fornix should be deep enough to retain the prosthesis and allow good lid motility.

2.

Volume loss of about 2-5 ml.:
Excess volume loss on the socket may be due to absence of orbital implant or migrated implant. When volume loss is less than 2 cc the prosthesis may be too thin or it may not be tolerated.

3.

Well-centered orbital implant:
Those patients who have undergone surgical removal of the eye give best results with a well centered right size orbital implant.

4.

Motility of the ocular prosthesis:
Motility of artificial eye is a functional of motility on the surface of socket and presence of motility coupling post over the bio-integrated orbital implant.

5.

Normal ocular adnexa:
The eye tissues surrounding the eyeball like eye lids, bony orbit and eye brows should be normal in structure and function in order to give the life like appearance to the artificial eye.
