As doctors we always try to salvage the vision and eye,
however there are situations where the eye cannot be retained
and the final appearance may not be optimal. Loss of vision
is not the only problem but disfigured eye is equally
significant problem for most of these patients- for they
are often intimidated by their abnormal appearance and
feel cut off from society. The psychological impact may
be severe enough to affect the lifestyle of patient. We
have had patients who refused to go to school or could
not continue their profession because of discrimination
due to their one eyed look. Our treatment can make a world
of difference to these patients and they can join the
mainstream of society without any fear of discrimination.
However every patient is unique and his/her condition
requires detailed evaluation to assess the pre-requisites
for optimal outcome with artificial eye before we
can tell them about our expected results.
In case of enucleation or evisceration
presence of orbital implant is vital for satisfactory
outcome. They help correcting the volume loss that is
created following removal of the eye and also impart motility
to the artificial eye.

Prosthesis

These orbital implants are placed in the
orbit and muscles may be attached to it for better motility
of the prosthesis.
This Patient received Biointegrated orbital
implant following enucleation and there was no appearance
of volume loss after the final outcome with ocular prosthesis.
In cases of contracted
sockets where the artificial eye cannot be fitted
one needs to assess the component of volume loss as well
as loss of the surface area. It is very much possible
to rehabilitate these patients with appropriate surgical
correction.
