The eye socket may become contracted for various reasons,
prolong inflammation due to use of stock or readymade
artificial eye is the most common of them. Other important
reasons are trauma or collagen vascular diseases.
Contracted socket may have either the
component of volume loss or loss of the surface area
or both of them. Contracted sockets with loss of surface
area respond quite well to the Mucus Membrane Graft,
however cases associated with volume loss warrant augmentation
of volume along with addition of surface area. Dermis
Fat Graft (DFG) is an excellent option for such patients.
This is one of our patients who had both volume and
surface area loss and DFG was performed with excellent
results. Note the superior sulcus defect before surgery
that was filled with the graft tissue. Custom ocular
prosthesis following the surgery provides excellent
outcome even for such difficult cases.

This is another example to show the reconstructed
socket after DFG. Note well-formed fornices and good volume
augmentation eliminating the superior sulcus defect.
